CE 414 - Lab 1 - Utah County Roads
==================================

WHAT THIS IS
A file geodatabase containing every road centerline inside Utah County:
  38817 features, 90 attribute fields, in GCS_WGS_1984.

WHERE IT CAME FROM
Source: Utah Roads, published by the Utah Geospatial Resource Center (UGRC)
            https://opendata.gis.utah.gov/datasets/utah-roads/about
  Service: https://services1.arcgis.com/99lidPhWCzftIe9K/arcgis/rest/services/UtahRoads/FeatureServer/0
Licence: CC BY 4.0. You must credit UGRC on any map you publish from it.
  Retrieved and clipped: 2026-09-04

WHAT WAS DONE TO IT
  1. Downloaded the statewide Utah Roads shapefile from UGRC (413,311 features,
     about 600 MB unzipped).
  2. Clipped it to the Utah County boundary from UGRC's Utah County Boundaries
layer. That is why you get 38817 features instead of 413,311, and why this
download is about 6 MB instead of 135 MB.
  3. Converted it to a file geodatabase and RE-ATTACHED the CARTOCODE
     coded-value domain.

Step 3 matters. A shapefile cannot store a coded-value domain, so if you had
downloaded the data yourself you would see CARTOCODE values of '1', '2', '3'
with nothing to tell you what they mean. In this geodatabase the domain
travels with the data, so ArcGIS Pro can show you the meaning of each code.

WHAT WAS *NOT* DONE
No roads were filtered out by class. All road types are here, from interstates
to driveways. Selecting the classes you want is your job in Step 5.

IF YOU WANT THE ORIGINAL INSTEAD
Nothing stops you downloading the full statewide layer from the UGRC link
above. You will need it if you extend this analysis beyond Utah County.
