Exams

There are three exams. Dates and Testing Center windows for the current semester are on Learning Suite; their place in the sequence is on the schedule.

Concepts Exam 1

A Testing Center exam covering all of the textbook quizzes and concepts lecture material covered in class up to that point: introduction to GIS, data models and file types, map design and symbology, GPS, vector data, and raster data.

Concepts Exam 2

A Testing Center exam covering all of the textbook quizzes and concepts lecture material covered in class so far, with emphasis on the material since Exam 1: web services and finding data, geodesy and projections, metadata, geoprocessing, and site selection. A study session is held in class beforehand.

Final Exam (finals week)

The final exam is a hands-on, practical exam given in the regular classroom during finals week, in the university-scheduled final exam slot for this class (a three-hour block; the exact date and time are on Learning Suite). You complete the exam in QGIS following the provided instructions and upload a PDF of your results to Learning Suite. The last Tuesday of classes is a review session.

Rules That Apply to All Exams

  • Exams cover concepts from quizzes, readings, and lectures, as well as hands-on practical testing using GIS software.
  • AI tools are not permitted during the Concepts Exams or the Final Exam. See the AI Use Policy.
  • The open-book reading quizzes are your best preparation: the same concepts reappear on the exams, where the book and notes are not available.
  • Accommodations: if you have a disability that affects test-taking, contact the University Accessibility Center early in the semester so arrangements can be made with the Testing Center. See University Policies.
