Grading¶
What Counts¶
Your grade comes from these categories. Point values for the current semester are on Learning Suite.
| Category | What it is | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reading quizzes | Eight open-book, untimed online quizzes keyed to the textbook and lectures | Taken on Learning Suite; cannot be submitted late |
| Labs | Eleven QGIS lab reports, submitted as a single PDF | Due Saturday 11:59 pm; late penalty applies |
| In-class activities | Short activities during Tuesday and Thursday sessions, recorded on Learning Suite | Completed in class |
| Experiences | BYU Belonging Map, Community and Professional Map Experience, Web Mapping with AI Experience | See Assignments |
| Concepts Exams | Two Testing Center exams covering quizzes, readings, and lectures to date | See Exams |
| Final Exam | Hands-on practical exam in QGIS, given in class | See Exams |
| Final Project | A mapping term project submitted as a PDF report | See Final Project |
| Attendance and participation | Mark your own attendance on Learning Suite for each Tuesday and Thursday class | Points are entered at the end of the semester |
| Course evaluation | Extra credit for completing the end-of-semester evaluation at studentratings.byu.edu | The instructor sees who completed it, not the content |

Late Work¶
- Labs: late lab assignments receive a 10% penalty per week late, unless special arrangements are made with the instructor ahead of time.
- Quizzes: graded online through Learning Suite and cannot be submitted late.
- No labs or quizzes are dropped.
- Exams cover concepts from quizzes, readings, and lectures, as well as hands-on practical testing using GIS software.
Study Habits¶
The quizzes are all online through Learning Suite. They have no time limit and are meant to be done with your notes and textbook in hand. Take the readings and quiz questions seriously and give yourself enough time; the same concepts reappear on the Concepts Exams, where the book, notes, and AI tools are not available.
Academic Honesty¶
Everything you submit must be your own work. Read the AI Use Policy for how AI fits into that, and the University Policies page for the Honor Code and plagiarism standards that apply to every BYU course.
