Grading

How the grade is computed

Total points earned divided by total points possible gives your percentage, which is read against the scale below. No curve is used. The number of points available for assignments, quizzes, and exams may change slightly during the semester as the course is adjusted, for example if a pop quiz is dropped or an in-class activity is added, so do not plan your effort around a point total computed on the first day.

Grading scale

Grade Minimum Grade Minimum
A 93 % C+ 77 %
A− 90 % C 73 %
B+ 87 % C− 70 %
B 83 % D+ 67 %
B− 80 % D 63 %
D− 60 %

Below 60 % is an E.

What is graded

Point values are from the Learning Suite assignments view (September 8, 2026) plus Lab 12, added October 10, 2026: 1,320 points in all. The grade is points-based, so the percentages below are simply each component's share of the total and will shift a little if points are added or dropped during the semester.

Component Points Notes
Labs 1 to 12 50 each, 600 total (about 45 %) One PDF report each, on Learning Suite. Due Saturday 11:59 pm of the week assigned.
Reading quizzes (11) 20 each, 220 total (about 17 %) Open book, on Learning Suite, done independently. Due Saturday 11:59 pm of the week assigned.
Midterms 1 and 2 100 each Closed book, concept based, in the Testing Center. Open Tuesday 8:00 am to Thursday 9:00 pm of Weeks 8 and 14.
Final exam 100 One question done in ArcGIS Pro in the lab during finals week; open book and open computer; three-hour block.
Final project 100 total Proposal meeting 10, presentation 40, lab-style write-up 50. See the Final Project page.
In-class activities (9) 5 each, 45 total Uploaded to Learning Suite the day they happen. Only presented in class.
Attendance 25 Record your attendance on the class Google document; missed classes are subtracted.
Peer review 20 Review and stamp at least ten classmates' lab reports, two points each, and turn in a memo at the end listing whom you reviewed.
Final project presentation notes 10 Notes on at least ten classmates' presentations.

The three exams together are about 23 % of the grade and the final project about 8 %. Attendance, the in-class activities, peer review, and the presentation notes together are the Attendance and Participation category, about 8 %.

Extra credit

  • Five points for completing the end-of-semester course evaluation at studentratings.byu.edu.
  • School spirit and belonging: attend a cultural or sporting event with other BYU students, take a picture, and post it to the Learning Suite assignment.

Attendance

Regular attendance in class and lab sessions is critical. Some quiz and exam material is not in the book and is only presented in class, and the in-class activities are where the concepts get locked in.

Late work policy

Lab assignments may be submitted late with a penalty of 10 % for each week late.

The same rule lets you revise a lab. If you submit on time and score below 90 %, you may fix the problems and resubmit. The resubmission is graded as late work, so a corrected lab resubmitted within a week of the due date can raise your score to as much as 90 %.
