Week 8: Flood Mapping and Midterm 1

Also this week

  • Midterm 1 — closed book, concept based, in the Testing Center, on Weeks 1–7 (study guide) — opens Tuesday 8:00 am and closes Thursday 9:00 pm; the Testing Center late fee starts Thursday 2:00 pm.

Presentation Slides

  • Tuesday — Flood Mapping, Part A — From a flow to a flooded map: annual peaks and the 100-year flood as a 1% chance, the rating curve, gage height versus depth, the bathtub model, and what FEMA does instead.
  • Thursday — Flood Mapping, Part B — HAND, height above nearest drainage: Lab 5's chain plus Flow Distance, the stream definition, one threshold per flood, scoring a flood map against FEMA's, and Lab 7.

In-Class Practice

Self-check quizzes — not graded; open them on a phone or laptop as often as you like:

  • How Big, How High? — Five questions on what a 100-year flood means, a rating curve, depth above the river, and when a bathtub model is the right one.
  • Height Above What? — Five questions on what HAND measures, the tool that computes it, why the stream definition matters, and how to score a flood map.

Lab Assignment

Lab 7 — Flood Mapping with HAND
