Week 10: Cut, Fill, and Raster Volumes

Presentation Slides

  • Tuesday — Cut and Fill — Earthwork as the difference of two surfaces: cut and fill cell by cell, the balance grade of a level pad, ArcGIS Pro's Cut Fill tool, average end area for roads, and what a grid volume leaves out.
  • Thursday — Volumes with Rasters — How much rock is in a mountain: height times cell area summed, Raster Calculator and Zonal Statistics versus Surface Volume, why the base surface decides the answer, and Lab 9.

In-Class Practice

Self-check quizzes — not graded; open them on a phone or laptop as often as you like:

  • Cut or Fill? — Five questions on cut versus fill, raising a pad's grade, the balance grade, the sign of Cut Fill's VOLUME, and what a grid volume leaves out.
  • The Base Is the Answer — Five questions on a cell's volume, why a DEM must be projected first, when Surface Volume is enough, and why the base surface decides a mountain's volume.
