Week 4: Imagery

Presentation Slides

  • Tuesday — Georectifying Images — Giving a scanned map or photo real-world coordinates: control points, transformations, and what can go wrong.
  • Thursday — Remote Sensing — How sensors see the Earth: the electromagnetic spectrum, what a digital image stores, splitting images into bands, false color, hyperspectral imagery, and the satellites that take the pictures.

In-Class Practice

  • Georeference Your Home (graded, 5 points) — done in class Tuesday; upload a screen capture by 9:30 am, fifteen minutes after class.

Self-check quizzes — not graded; open them on a phone or laptop as often as you like:

  • Line It Up — Five questions on putting a scanned image in its place: why you georectify before you digitize, where control points belong, and why a small RMS error is not an accuracy figure.
  • Light and Bands — Five questions on what a band is, why vegetation is bright in reflected near-infrared, what makes a display false color, and why no one satellite does everything.
